After School Program
ICOACH’s after school program encompasses educational priorities while addressing the financial and accessibility needs of our youth participants. This program is designed to increase math, English, and reading proficiency to refugee and K-12 students. By providing transportation to tutoring sites, nutritious meals at tutoring sessions, and educational support to our youth, we strive to increase the scholastic knowledge, educational comprehension, and overall wellbeing of each participant. Our volunteers’ priorities are to help K-12 participants stay current in their daily lessons while offering in-depth comprehension checks to ensure students are understanding what is being taught. Most K-12 students have between four and six assignments for homework daily, and due to language barriers, refugee and immigrant students are not able to complete their assignments, which causes a lot of frustration and hopelessness. As a result, refugee and immigrant students are dropping out before they graduate from high school.
Our participants are always in need of extra support both academically and socially, which is why our volunteers provide additional help with physical workbooks assigned to K-12 students and their social skills. We also offer a variety of additional activities such as learning games and reading opportunities to keep students engaged and learning. Volunteers are also using various tools to bring students who may be behind up to their grade level’s standard. Those who require more one-on-one time are able to have assistance, allowing each participant to truly grasp the concepts.
