Des Moines Public Schools said Tuesday it is struggling to get its students to attend online classes during the pandemic.

JOHNSTON, Iowa — The First Baptist Church in Johnston is pairing with a local Congolese man in efforts to help refugee children feel welcome in their new community, as well as keep their English skills sharp in the summer.

Human rights groups are expecting thousands of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to soon be resettled in the United States. Years of war and ethnically motivated violence have led to a humanitarian crisis, forcing hundreds of thousands to leave their homes.
